Leap of Faith

June 7, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Despite being in a bad mood today (or maybe because of it), I’m posting an image with a positive theme. This is another one I created from a paper person, using a variety of layers and layering effects.

Naming this piece was very instinctive–there is a physical dimension in that the figure crosses over a chasm (the dark blue area). However, a spiritual transformation also occurs; the woman helps herself cross a boundary, and, in doing so, facilitates her own salvation.

What is the boundary? For me, it is deeply Kierkegaardian–an embracing of the uncertainty involved in a spiritual journey and, in turn, humility in the face of the mystery of the Divine.

In other words, the spiritual life involves a persistent quest for the Divine, which we cannot know objectively. Seeking Divinity involves the anxiety of not knowing, and a transforming humility that results from it.

It is a constant yearning to become closer to Divinity, which inspires us to discover it in the act of living our lives, often in the most unexpected places.
